Indonesian Hotel: 16% Reduction in Electricity Usage in 1 month

|

Context

  • Bali, Indonesia
  • 154 guest rooms, 2 function spaces and 1 restaurant
  • Average ambient temperature 27°C, previous default cooling setting 21°C

Results

  • 16% reduction in baseline electricity usage after 1 month, and 19% after 3 months (USD $13000 annualised saving)
  • 9-11% reduction in CO2 emissions
  • No negative reviews mentioning the AC cooling setting

Methods

  • Change default in-room temperature settings from 21°C to 25°C. This involved re-setting all AC remotes. Customers were still able to change the in-room temperature as desired
  • Communicate rationale to guests through Go25degrees signage in each room
  • Educate & train cleaning staff on the new policy
